Welcome to Augusta, Maine.
Augusta is the capital of the state of Maine in the United States. It is located on the Kennebec River at the head of navigation or "head of the tide". As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 18,560. It is the county seat of Kennebec County.
Augusta has been the capital city since 1827, seven years after Maine was admitted to the Union. The Capital Building sits as a centerpiece for this special city. It is here in the capital building that Maine's legislature haggles out our political future. Augusta is the center of employment, commerce and service for Central Maine and is where most of the state and county governmental agencies are located. Most statewide organizations in Maine base their offices in this city, which is considered a central location to hold meetings, conferences and banquets, usually in Augusta's Civic Center that is located directly off I-95.
Augusta is also considered a city rich in history. It was in the early days a trading post and is now grown as an industrial and trade center.
Today, visitors can take tours of historic buildings including restored Old Fort Western or stroll through museums that outline Maine's history.
While Augusta is a capital city, it also includes areas of quaint communities with traditional homes on tree-lined streets. Augusta has a total of 8 schools with a student/teacher ratio of 12.6 to 1 and a graduate rate of 99.7%. Post-secondary schooling needs are served by the Mid State College and the University of Maine at Augusta. Community resources include the Lithgow Public Library, the Maine State Library, and the Maine State Law Library.
